Stress-Busting for Small Business Owners

Stress Busting for Small Business Owners

Too many things to do with too little time? You’re not alone – most online store owners are dealing with strained schedules. This Volusion blog post discusses how stress affects small businesses and offers various ideas on how to bust through it.

Stressed out? You’re not alone – The American Institute of Stress (AIS) states that 62% of Americans experience stress related to work. And if you’re an online business owner doing all the work, you might even fit into this category: 25% of employed workers say their job is the #1 cause of stress in their lives. One of my elders even said, “If you’re not stressed, you’re not working hard enough.”

.

No disrespect, but I beg to differ. Take a look at how this problem can affect you and your business, from the American Psychological Association:

  • Stressed individuals are less productive than their counterparts, averaging more time spent on the job with fewer deliverable results.
  • Job stress is of concern for employers, costing U.S. businesses an estimated $300 billion per year through absenteeism, diminished productivity, employee turnover and direct medical, legal and insurance fees.
  • Overly stressed workers are more likely to suffer from mental health problems, such as anxiety and depression.

.

One of the main takeaways is to not stress over stress. Take a look at some of these tips to help you break through the anxiety and get back to a balanced, productive lifestyle:

  • Make a to-do list. Don’t throw every single project on that daily list – only put the tasks of high priority that you know can be completed in one day. Then, tackle each task one at a time. Although multitasking is glorified, it isn’t necessarily the most productive route.
  • Discover the root cause of your stress. Many people are stressed out but don’t really know why. Often times, stress is rooted in fear – so ask yourself, “What am I afraid of?” or “Why am I working this much?” Once you find the cause of the problem, you can take steps to address it.
  • Turn off the computer. Turn off your phone. Wireless communications have helped increase efficiencies across the board. At the same time, being in contact 24/7 can cut into your personal and family time. In other words, if you can’t ever fully detach yourself from the job, you’ll never be stress free.
  • Be good to your mind. Be good to your body. Make sure you’re getting enough sleep at night, even if it means setting a strict bedtime. Stress also leads you to cram down junk food, which only makes you feel more lethargic and tired. Try to get some exercise, eat better and make sure you recharge your batteries. (Easier said than done, but this one really works wonders.)
  • Remind yourself of what you love. Set aside at least one hour every day or so to engage in an activity that you love. I’m a huge fan of cooking, so I make sure to try a new recipe at least once a week. If you’re into traveling but don’t have time, take an hour to plan out your dream trip online. If you’re into fine wines, treat yourself to a glass of something new. Whatever you love defines your personality – don’t let stress strip that away.

.

Believe it or not, your stress can pass over to your employees, coworkers and loved ones. To help prevent spreading a problem, try some of these tactics to lessen your anxiety on the job. In this whirlwind of an industry we call ecommerce, working smart helps you succeed online better than working hard.

Regular breaks is essential for the small business owner as stress can build up and sneak up at you before you know it.

Build into your scedule breaks away from your desk, even it is just to stand up and do some stretches or to go outside and take a few deep breaths.
