Volusion Product Update: Volusion Releases PayPal Express Integration for All V13 Stores

You asked, we listened: PayPal Express is now available to V13 stores across all plans. Read this article to learn more about the integration and how to get started with it.

paypallexpress Volusion Product Update: Volusion Releases PayPal Express Integration for All V13 Stores

Back in January, our Product team conducted a customer survey to gather feedback on new software features and enhancements that are important to you. After combing through the results, we found a high amount of interest in implementing a new PayPal experience, namely adding a deeper level of integration via PayPal Express.

If you’re currently using PayPal Standard, making the switch to PayPal Express will deliver a greatly improved experience for you and your customers. Currently, with PayPal Standard, once your customers choose to checkout via PayPal, they’re moved from your site to PayPal’s, and upon submitting payment, the customer must manually go back to your store to view the “Order Finished” page, which often results in incomplete orders and missed sales opportunities.

The new PayPal Express integration provides a seamless checkout experience for your customers. You can now brand the new PayPal Express page, and even more, your customers will be automatically redirected back to your site after they choose the shipping address and PayPal payment type to place their order.

Want some more good news? With PayPal Express, you now have the ability to process full refunds.

After hearing your resounding feedback regarding this feature, we’re happy to report that you’ll enjoy the following benefits of using PayPal Express:

  • Seamless payment experience for your customers: As mentioned above, shoppers who choose to pay via PayPal seemingly never leave your site for payment, as the PayPal Express page can be branded with your logo. Shoppers are also automatically redirected back to your site to complete the order.
  • No incomplete orders: This new integration resolves two big pain points regarding incomplete orders that you may have experienced while using PayPal Standard: 1) orders submitted on your site, but not paid for on the PayPal site and 2) orders paid for via PayPal but not submitted on your site. Thanks to PayPal Express, however, these issues will be a thing of the past.
  • Faster checkout: PayPal Express conveniently stores your customers’ billing and shipping information, making the checkout process much faster for them – always a good thing when it comes to increasing conversions.
  • No monthly fee: Who needs another monthly bill? When using PayPal Express, you won’t be charged a monthly fee from PayPal.

If you’re looking to get started, be sure to check out our Knowledge Base article and video on setting up PayPal Express. Please note that you won’t be able to use both PayPal Standard and PayPal Express with your store. In fact, if you’re going to accept PayPal at all, using PayPal Express is a good idea, not only because of the benefits we’ve discussed here, but because we’ll also be sunsetting PayPal Standard before the end of this year.

Thanks, as always, for your feedback – it means a lot to our team as we establish our product roadmap for new features and enhancements. If you have any feedback for us at any time, please drop us a line at our ideas page.

Awesome thank you. Making the check out as dumb as possible should increase the conversion rates. No more abandons because “need to fill out X field” or forms.

Thank you Volusion!!! Seems to intergrate very well into the system, no more chasing up abondons. Great work. One very happy customer.

I welcome this new functionality, and agree with Patrick that anything to reduce typing should help conversions, especially on mobile devices (which are now 20% of our business).

Hopefully the kinks get worked out quickly specifically, unless you allow anonymous checkout, PayPal Express is useless.
If you require registration, then the customer can’t just click the PayPal Express checkout, they must first register before being able to click the PayPal Express checkout.
That means they type all of the information that PayPal Express should bring over eroding the benefit of PayPal Express.

Out of all the things requested this was the first? I would much rather prefer backend html work for quicking parsing of javascript. I would also prefer a better use of Header tags, alt attriibutes on images, and easier configuration of default elements than paypal at this point. for image heavy site like mine it needs to load faster.

Since express doesn’t work with recurring billing, and standard will be “sunsetting” does this mean we will no longer be able to take orders with recurring billing from PayPal?

Hi, Jay. Thank you for your feedback. We will evaluate alternatives for allowing your customers to pay for recurring products with PayPal. We will commit to providing you with ample advanced notice about the new solution and will strive to avoid any negative impact to your business processes.

Activated it this morning and did nothing then correct my costumers orders and explain to people why they could not pay with paypal at checkout
All my costumers log in before checking out and there is no PayPal anymore in drop down window. So now it is disabled again.

It is simply unusable for those who use only PP for payment

Hi, Maxim. Thank you for sharing your feedback, and we understand your concern. We implemented the current PayPal Express checkout flow so that it would be minimally disruptive to our merchants’ custom store design elements. We are looking at redesigning the checkout flow and will take your feedback into consideration.

I think it is great you have implemented PayPal Express – but would like to see the Pay Now with PayPal button on both the shopping cart AND the one page checkout , so customers who miss it at the first point still have the option to pay with paypal.

I intergrated PP Express, but soon reverted back to PP standard. The reason is that PP express does not work with automatic dropshipping and automatic product key delivery.

PP standard does. For me PP express is not an upgrade. For me Volusion released this as a half decent solution, there is no point in it.

The same goes for eBay intration, great idea but does not work properly, there is still a shipping fee bug that has yet to be fixed.

Hi George, thanks for your feedback. Please note that this integration wasn’t built to fully support downloadable products, as Product Keys aren’t automatically generated for orders placed via PayPal Express. Instead, you’ll need to manually send product keys by clicking Complete Order or by selecting Product Keys from the Email dropdown list and clicking Resend.

Regarding dropshipping, please note that POs aren’t automatically generated at any point by orders placed using PayPal Express. Instead, you’ll need to manually generate the drop-ship PO by enabling Apply to All Items Regardless of Status and clicking Go in the Drop Ship area of the Order Details screen.

In terms of your note on the eBay integration, please note that, as with all aspects of our software, we readily identify any reported bugs and prioritize resolutions based on a combination of factors, so stay tuned as we continue to work these through.

I switched to PayPal Express when you first announced it last month, and began receiving complaints from customers that they were not being presented with their download link after paying (our products are digital). When I spoke to your tech support, I was told that I had to go into each order and manually complete it. This is unacceptable. I switched back to regular old PayPal. Have you fixed this bug? My orders have to complete on their own, as with all the other methods of payment…and the old PayPal!

As your feedback is important to us, we’ll keep this idea in mind as we plan future enhancements to our product.

Have there been any improvements on the location of the paypal express button yet? I won’t be using it until it can be located on the one page checkout, it was too confusing for my customers the original way.

Hi Laura, thanks for your question. We’re currently evaluating improvements to the One Page Checkout and will certainly consider how best to add PayPal as an option to the page. However, our primary goal will be to minimize change to existing stores while also ensuring the most usable and intuitive checkout flow. Hope this helps. Thanks!

I have been waiting for this for a long time – but its pointless for me! I cannot use it! If I activate this option, and then returning customers attempt to place an order they cant! That’s because Paypal doesn’t appear in the drop down for payment option after they have logged in. Paypal express only works if they click the Paypal Express icon PRIOR to logging in. Once they log in, that option goes – and they cannot check out. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS. I don’t know how Volusion could roll this out without having seen this problem prior…

Hi Rhonda, thanks for the note. Regarding placing the “Pay with PayPal” button as an additional button on the Cart page is the suggested approach by PayPal. However, we’ll be sure to evaluate additional improvements for allowing shoppers to select PayPal on One Page Checkout in the future. Thanks!

I’ve been using PayPal Standard for a number of years as my main means of customer payment without problems. There is no monthly fee and I really wish Volusion were not forcing me to use Express. I’m assuming Volusion actually have their own agenda rather than having their customers’ interests at heart. I’m very disappointed.

Hi Roslyn, we appreciate the feedback. We feel our new PayPal Express integration is a far superior choice for allowing shoppers to pay with PayPal; the advantages over our previous PayPal Standard integration are numerous but primarily, this integration now ensures your orders have been properly been paid before the order is marked as complete. This should provide you with additional piece of mind while also reduce your time spent tracking down unpaid orders.

With Paypal Express, the payment confirmations no longer have the Volusion order # on them. I’ve spoken with both PayPal and Volusion regarding this issue and the consensus was there is no resolution b/c now customers are paying BEFORE an order # is generated. Therefore, the order # cannot be included with the payment. This makes it very difficult to match orders w/ payments, especially when some customers use a different email or name on Paypal than they do on our site. I also agree that a PayPal payment option should be available on the 1 Page Checkout screen.

Hi Lauren, thanks for touching base with us. Our PayPal Express integration adds the PayPal Transaction ID to your Volusion Order Detail record. From there, you can then search for records that match that Transaction ID within your PayPal administrative account. We’d like to get more information about your specific situation to better assist you, so could you please contact our Support team for additional help? Thanks!

This needs to be fixed to allow returning customers to be able to log back in and use it. It assigns them a different customer ID every time which confuses people and does not allow their points to be kept if you have a reward section there.

PayPal Express is a Bust! Their are so many problems customer will email you they can’t use credit cards without creating a PayPal Account. The hipe is “No Need PayPal Account Needed. This is pure B.S. Users are forced to regester and this creates a PayPal Account. Also if your customers havea PayPal Account linked to a Credit Card they can not use that card for payment, They are force to use their PayPal Account. PayPal Express is a good idea, but it doesn’t work like advertised. Maybe someday it will be, but for now it will cost you customer and that means “Money Lost”.

I love the way PayPal Express marks orders PAID in Volusion, but the presentation in the Check out process really sucks…. Customers can’t find the “button” on the bottom of the check out screen, and they don’t find PayPal as a payment option after they Log In. And I just wanted to tell you that I, like most of your customers, find this totally unacceptable. We expect improvements to the use of PayPal Express in the Check out pages as soon as possible. Because even though it would take a lot of work to move our Store, if you continue to “screw up” the check out process, we will be force to find another method of selling on line. I’ve been very happy with Volusion, up until now. I look forward to the Corrections I am hoping you are working on to fix this SERIOUS issue with customer check out.

One other problem we have noticed with orders paid via PayPal Express, is our Vendor purchase order ( drop ship ) emails are not be generated when order is placed / paid via PayPal Express. We have had to manual create these vendor emails ( and watch orders closing for those that failed to generate the automatic emails to our Vendors ). System still works fine for orders paid via credit card. It’s just the PayPal Express payments that are not triggering the Vendor purchase order emails. I hope to see this fixed soon.

Hi again Andrew, that’s correct – this capability was not incorporated into this integration. As our support documentation mentions, POs are not automatically generated at any point by orders placed using PayPal Express. You’ll need to instead manually generate the drop-ship PO by enabling Apply to All Items Regardless of Status and clicking Go in the Drop Ship area of the Order Details screen. Hope this helps.

NEW ISSUES that REQUIRE correction / fix by Volusion:
    * The support ticket answers was very “lacking”… =
Currently with the integration we have with PayPal Express it does not automatically generate the POs for products set up to auto drop ship. We have documented this within our support article on PayPal Express (http://support.volusion.com/article/using-paypal-express-volusion#Purchase%20Orders%20and%20Auto%20Drop%20Shipping%20with%20PayPal%20Express). If you wish to request the way these orders are handled in regards to POs, I would suggest doing a feature request at http://ideas.volusion.com. ********************
    * My reply … SUGGESTIONS =====
What is the point of having support Tickets, if you guys always give the same Answer….. “know it’s a problem”… “suggest doing a feature request”.. This is a SYSTEM FAILURE.. We are Requesting this be FIXED… this is not a “suggestion” for an improvement.. this is a plea for something that is BROKEN in the System to be Repaired as soon as possible.

We just recently joined Volusion and are using PayPal as our payment gateway. We originally chose PayPal Express during development and discovered that our customers would be forced to create a PayPal account and not allowed to check out as a Guest. The only way we could allow customers to check out as a guest was to use PayPal Standard. We now understand that Volusion will be discontinuing support for Standard in the next few months. In talking to both Volusion and PayPal technical support reps, this problem is apparently an integration issue. We have been told by several PayPal reps that Express itself is capable of allowing Guest checkout. One PayPal software engineer told us that this Guest checkout integration problem could be easily solved with an API call in the Volusion program. Specifically, solutiontype=sole, landingpage=billing. Other clients have commented earlier about this Guest checkout issue and Volusion is not looking for a solution. Why don’t they work with PayPal to solve this issue? In my opinion, if they are not looking for a solution to this problem, Volusion does not appear to have the client’s interest in mind and it may be solely an economic issue for them.
