Since You Asked: Tips, Tricks and Special Hints – Troubleshooting Your FTP

Welcome to Since You Asked: Tips, Tricks and Special Hints, our latest video series designed to give you answers to some of your most burning support questions. Today we share some helpful advice on how to troubleshoot your FTP.

Hi, and welcome to “Tips, Tricks and Special Hints”. My name is Amanda, and this is Volusion’s series to help our merchants address their most common questions. Today we’re going to be talking about the basics of using your FTP and some quick troubleshooting hints.

One of the most common questions we get about FTP is a simple one: “How do I get my password?” If you lose your FTP password, you can just go into my.volusion.com, and in the left-hand menu, under “My Store” click on “FTP”. Your account name is going to be available there under “Account Settings”, and then you just click the “View” button to grab your password right from there.

So now you’ve got your password, how are you going to hold on to it? An easy way to do this, especially if you’re using Filezilla, is to actually create a password keychain. Go to the top left-hand corner and click on “Site Manager”. In that pop-up, you want to click on the “New Site” button. Enter your login credentials: your password, your username, and you always want to set your Port to “21” and your logon type to “Normal”. This is going to allow you, once you hit “Save”, to actually just log in and click your credentials from a drop-down button so you don’t need to keep looking or write down your password anywhere.

Once you’re logged into your FTP, you can start adding and uploading files to change the layout and format of your store. One of the most common questions we get at this point is “Help! I’m logged in, but I can’t add anything!” If this is what you’re running into, you want to make sure that you’ve got both “Read” and “Write” enabled on your FTP. To do this, we’re going to go back to my.volusion.com. Go to the “My Store” menu, under that click on “FTP” and click on “Edit”. There you should see “Read” and “Write” that both have boxes, and you want to make sure both are enabled so that you can add and upload content, and take things off when you’re ready to.

I hope this helped, and thank you for tuning in to “Since You Asked.” Happy Uploading!
