Here’s the transcript if you’d like to read along:

Hi everybody! My name is Matt and I’m a Social Media Manager here at Volusion. Welcome to Two Minute Tuesdays, where we give you two minutes of ecommerce advice to bolster your online success.

We’ve been doing Two Minute Tuesdays for a long time now and the one subject that we get the most questions about is web design. With this in mind, I’d like to give you something that you can keep in your back pocket and that is my five most important web design tips, ever.

Number 1: First impressions count. Always remember that there are millions and millions of sites on the web, so if someone comes to your site, make sure it’s special by creating an immediately positive reaction upon entering. Remember, the back button is just a click away, so make sure that you’re making a good first impression with your site design.

Number 2: Keep it simple. It’s easy to get caught up in wanting to have lots of graphics and colors everywhere, but remember that keeping it simple is key to making a good first impression. Don’t be afraid of white space and don’t be afraid to edit.

Number 3: Consistency is everything. Your website is the basis of your brand, which is what you’re building with your online business. Make sure that your design, email and social channels are consistent. Use the same colors, font, logos and things of that sort to build a consistent branding experience at any touch point on the web.

Number 4: Don’t make users think. This really ties in with keeping it simple. The key is to always tell site visitors where to go and what to do when they get there. Use clean images and clean call to action buttons on your website, making sure that you’re driving the action that you want customers to take.

Number 5: Always test and improve. You may have a new web design that you think is fantastic, but until you see how customers react to it, you’ll never really know how effective it is. So make sure that you’re testing elements, improving them and then testing again.

Hopefully these five tips will be the most important you’ll ever see and serve as a good cornerstone to a fantastic web design for you and your online business. If you have any questions, we’re always happy to help.

From me to you, happy selling!

Matt, Love the 2 Minute Tuesday Video’s, always well presented and thought out. Couldn’t agree with you more and for the test..test..test, we just had Volusion set up our Google Analytics Ecommerce Code to monitor and evaluate our campaigns and landing pages better. You guys rocked, said it would be done in 5 days and it was done in 1. Love this tool and every Volusion customer should have this done if they haven’t already. Thanks again. Very nice post!
The first few seconds that a visitor spends on the website are very vital in retaining the prospective client. Therefore, the web design should be witty to communicate to the visitor what the website is concerning.
