Product Images are an Important Factor in Making the Sale

Unfortunately “what you see is what you get” is not always the case when purchasing items online. I myself have fallen prey to a false internet product picture and was left asking, would I have walked out of a physical store with this item in my hand? You don’t ever want your online business to falsely represent an item it’s selling. This will only mislead customers, often leading to a disgruntled return and the elimination of a return customer for that matter.

When purchasing from a company via the Internet, the picture provided on the site is the only physical object the customer has to look at, making it the only way possible to see the product they are about to purchase. With that being said, how important is that picture? Very.

Take product pictures yourself or hire someone else to do so. You can either use an editing program, such as Photoshop, to make the pictures look more attractive or even the ‘ol fashioned white sheet behind the product will do. Any type of valid physical representation of the item will help increase customer confidence in following through with a purchase. Show several photos of each product if applicable and in different colors/designs. Use alternate views and a larger view of the photo to show the item in more detail.

Have you ever heard the saying, “A picture is worth a thousand online sales”? I’m assuming that you probably have not, since I’m not sure if it’s ever really been said. With this being “said” for maybe the first or 100th time, I think it is a phrase that should at least be thought of fondly when selling online.

So get out the camera and start snapping. Show your customers what you have to offer and chances are they’ll show you the money in return!

I know when I work on sites, I include a picture of the product outside the box (as it would look when it comes out of the packaging) and then at least one in use. That way the the technical buyer can see the product and its dimensions - while the emotional buyer can see it as it is intended to be used.

Great article. I found out the way when I purchased computer speakers and got a totally different item than I expected.

We hire people to work on high-resolution product images. This can increase sales volume.
