Your customers are ready to spend money, so your shopping cart software should make sure you’re well-equipped to receive it. That’s why with Volusion, you can configure your store to receive payment in ways that suit your customers and your business, all from your store admin. In this post, we’ll look at the role your Volusion software plays in processing payments, as well as where to look in order to configure these settings.
To start off, your go-to hub for payment processing will be the Payment area of your store admin, which you can find under Settings > Payment. In the Payment area, there are three tabs: Payment Gateway, Card Settings and More Payment Types. Let’s take a moment to dive a little deeper into what each of these areas do.
The Payment Gateway tab is where you set up your payment gateway by entering in your gateway credentials. A payment gateway is the means by which merchants communicate sensitive information between a merchant’s site and the bank. Because of the sensitivity of credit card data, your store must have a payment gateway and an SSL configured in order to process credit card payments.
When choosing your payment gateway, it’s important to remember that different payment gateways have different levels of integration with Volusion’s software. Ideally, you want a payment gateway that is reliable and stable, easy to integrate with Volusion and provides all the processing features you need such as authorizing, capturing, crediting and voiding payments. This tab allows you to choose which credit and debit cards to accept on your site. By default, Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express are selected as the kinds of cards your business accepts. To change that, simply check or uncheck the box beside the card type. Below the active cards, you’ll see a link that says “Inactive Cards.” If you click on it, you can see other cards that you can accept, but don’t accept currently.
This tab is also where you’ll find the field “Card Display Label,” which affects what your customers will see when they click on the Payment Method drop-down menu on your checkout page. By default, it reads “Credit Card,” but what if you also accept debit? Then you would edit the field to say “Credit or Debit Card,” save your changes and then customers would see “Credit or Debit” as a payment option in the drop-down menu.
More Payment Types
This tab is where you configure settings for payment types that aren’t credit or debit cards, such as cash, money orders, PayPal and so on. Note that several of these other payment methods have Settings links that will open additional fields that you need to fill out. If you want to add a custom type of payment to accept, this tab is where you’d add that in.
If you accept these other types of payments, however, note that the Volusion software oftentimes can’t collect the funds for you. For example, if you have a customer paying by cash, you’ll have to collect that payment independently from the customer, whether it’s via mail or in-person. Volusion does, however, have the capability to easily update the payment info in your records so you’ll know an order has been paid.
In short, the Volusion Payment area is your central location for configuring payment options. When it comes to collecting your hard-earned money, Volusion’s got your back, providing you all the tools you need to make it as easy as possible.
